CHAPTER 12

We ride in silence to the gravesite. “You know where she is buried? Damn, you the FBI? How do you know that?”

“I did my research. If someone wants to find out anything, the internet will lead them to the answer.” I smile. “You ready?”

“Honestly, no. I don't think I can do this.” He starts to cry again.

“Yes you can. I know it will be hard but I'm right here with you. I got you. We have all day. We can sit in the car as long as you need.”

“I'm just going to prolong it. I have to do this. I owe it to her.”

We get out of the car and walk to her grave. I had to follow him because I didn't know the exact spot she was buried. It was a five minute walk to her grave and when we almost got there I noticed a woman kneeling on the ground bawling. As we got closer, I noticed it was Brayden's ex-wife, Nyla. I wasn't going to start no shit with her. There's a time and a place for everything. I beat her ass already; that's enough. Nyla hears us approaching and looks up.

“Brayden? Is that you?”

“Yes, it's me Nyla. Are you okay?” He asks sincerely.

“No. I'm not. I don't know if I can do this. I miss my baby so much. Why did God take her from us?” She cries uncontrollably. Brayden hugs her and they both cry together. I stand there for a second and give them their moment. I didn't want to intervene but when Brayden knelt down and started talking to his daughter and telling her how much he missed her, he lost it and I had to intervene.

“Nyla, I know you hate me right now because of what just happened not too long ago, but I'm here for you and Brayden. No funny shit. I–” Before I can get out anything else Nyla stands up and walks towards me and hugs me. She lays her head on my chest and I'm caught off guard. After a few seconds I wrap my arms around her and hug her. Brayden watches from the side with a confused look on his face.

“No one should ever have to go through this. I'm so sorry that you and Brayden are. Your baby girl was beautiful.” I look her in her eyes and sympathize with her. Brayden gets up and hugs me after placing the flowers on her grave.

“Thank you for everything Nevaeh. You put y'all differences aside on this special day and it makes me love you even more.” Brayden says. I notice that when Brayden tells me he loves me, Nyla looks up with a sad look on her face. A look of jealousy that she fucked up and now her ex husband was in love with someone else.

“Nevaeh, I'm glad that Brayden found someone like you. I can see that he really loves you and I'm happy for you guys. By all means it does hurt to see my ex with someone else, but I fucked up and let him get away.
